‘Alter-Ego’ paper dress

A geometric dress constructed from traditional Korean paper in collaboration with designer Nora Ahy Haenska. Working together as ‘aha studio’ (website coming soon) we designed and produced this concept piece in response to a brief set by DMY Berlin. From their website:

“DMY Berlin, cooperational partner of the Seoul Design Festival, chose 15 designers and artists to participate in the Redesign project of Designers’ LAB, Korea. The project idea is to create new objects and concepts made out of a traditional material.

The material of choice in 2008 is the traditional Korean paper, Hanji. Rolls of this versatile, highly resistant and chemical-free paper serve as a basic material for the creation of one, or a series, of 2 or 3 dimensional objects.

DMY Berlin takes over the transport of all works curated in Berlin to their final exhibition destination at the Seoul Design Festival in Korea.”

The striking geometric design can be laid out flat, folded up into the space of one triangle or transformed into a piece of clothing by joining specific triangles together around the wearer with the integrated Velcro tabs.

Label designs for a physical exhibit highlighting the impacts that food products have on crocodile habitats worldwide.

Supplied with the various product descriptions and associated environmental information
I designed a series of ‘dummy’ product labels as part of an exhibit installed in the new crocodile swamp at Paignton Zoo, Devon. Images of these products make up a supermarket style area in which users can scan barcodes to find out how the production of certain foods affects the wildlife habitats of crocodiles.

I’ve been drawing a lot of cameras recently and thought I’d stick one on here. I have a beautifully designed Braun Nizo super-8 camera from the ’70s which has been of inspiration…I was imagining a high-spec retro styled compact digital along the lines of th Ricoh GRD series.

A personal interest in user-centred design and small scale food production led me to ask the following question:

How can artisan food producers distinguish themselves and compete in a market saturated by low-cost factory produced food?

With a local organic bakery providing the context for my design explorations, I sought to answer the above question by drawing on skills in computer aided design developed during my studies.

This culminated in a range of one-off objects which add value to the specific food products. As an example of the possibilities I used the custom tools as part of an exhibition telling a story about the benefits of local food and the downside of industrialised production.
